There’s a song by the Stones called “Time is On My Side.” I love this song, because these days, time seems to truly be on my side.
I feel this way because I am rarely in a hurry in this season of my life now (I still eat fast, bad habits die hard). I take my sweet time doing things nowadays. I sometimes even find myself being intentionally late for things just because I can. It’s a 180 degree turn from the hectic chaos that was my hustle in the corporate world for 10 years. In recent years, I’ve learned the value of stopping and smelling the roses; I’ve been able to appreciate the power of the present.
This state of peace of course came at the price of great risks taken, struggle, disappointment, and perseverance. It was time well spent. As I’ve now gotten a chance to take stock of how I’ve spent all my time so far, I see an innate beauty in the truth of time.
Time, when it’s on your side, lets you relax. It lets you appreciate the good simple pleasures in life. It gives you peace in a seemingly chaotic world that has lost its way. When it’s on your side, time lets you think– it lets you marvel and plan at the great possibilities of life. Time that is on your side lets you grow in the best ways, as all good things do. Investments flourish with time.
Time, when respected, rewards you richly.
The other thing I love about time is that it is truthful. It eventually forces truths, intentions, and plans to materialize into their final form. Time goes at its own pace and brings you along whether you like it or not. This is its beauty- no amount of complaining or whining stops it. It forces the hesitant and the procrastinators to an eventuality. Time makes people grow old whether or not they are ready. I like it for that reason- it forces one to decisions. Acting or not acting are both decisions that are made regardless of the direction. And time well spent is rewarded with its alliance. Poorly spent time portends its wrath later on.
Time also forces faith upon us all. Whether it’s God, Allah, Mohammed, Confucius, or yourself, we all end up believing one truth, whether that truth is correct or not. Because we ultimately are finite but time isn’t, whatever one believes in, the real truth of why we are all here will become apparent one day. Time forces this to happen as if it was a divine power.
Time makes me write zany little posts of my subconscious mind on a Saturday afternoon. But hey, at least I got time to think about it. š
